Who is the former Justice Indu Malhotra who gave the verdict on Section-377? Now investigating the lapse in PM Modi’s security

New Delhi, The Supreme Court has entrusted the responsibility of investigating the lapse in the security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to former Justice Indu Malhotra. She will head the inquiry committee. Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA), Director General of Police of Union Territory of Chandigarh (DGP-Chandigarh) and Additional Director General of Police- Security (ADG-Security, Punjab Police) Punjab are the members of this committee. The Registrar General of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has also been made a member of the inquiry committee, which has safe records related to this incident that took place on January 5 in Firozpur, Punjab.

Indu Malhotra is not in the limelight for the first time

Justice Indu Malhotra is not in the headlines for the first time across the country. In the year 2018, when she was made a judge of the Supreme Court directly from a lawyer, she was still in the discussion. Because she was the first woman lawyer in the country to achieve this feat, at that time. Since independence, till 2018, she was ranked sixth in the list of women judges in the Supreme Court. He worked as a Supreme Court Justice from April-2018 to March-2021. Justice Indu Malhotra was born in Bangalore and studied in Delhi. He holds a BA degree from the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi. Justice Indu 1983, daughter of noted lawyer Late Omprakash Malhotra, was enrolled in the Bar Council of Delhi. About five years later, in 1988, she was elected Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court. In the year 2007, he was given the title of Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court. She became the second woman lawyer to achieve this feat.

CJI has investigated the sexual harassment case against Ranjan Gogoi

Justice Indu Malhotra has been a participant in many important cases and decisions during her tenure in the Supreme Court. For example, in the year 2019, a woman employee of his staff had accused the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi of sexual harassment. Then Justice Indu had investigated the matter and called the allegations baseless. He was given a different verdict from his fellow judges of the Supreme Court bench in the case related to the entry of women in the age group of 10 to 50 years into the Sabarimala temple in Kerala. He had refused to lift the ban on the entry of women in the temple. In his judgment, he wrote, ‘The principle of reason cannot apply in the case of religion.’ Not only this, Justice Indu was also a member in the Supreme Court bench which gave the historic decision to remove mutually consensual homosexual relations from the category of crime (Section-377 of IPC). In this he wrote, ‘This class of people could get justice after such a long time, for this history should apologize to them.’

Currently associated with Delhi Cricket Association

After retiring as a Supreme Court Justice, Indu Malhotra is currently associated with DDCA (Delhi Cricket Association). DDCA organized the Annual General Assembly in September-2021. In it, Justice Indu Malhotra has been appointed as the Ombudsman-cum-Ethics Officer of DDCA.
