New Delhi, Veteran lyricist Bichu Tirumala passed away on Friday. She was 80 years old. He died in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was being treated for respiratory problems. He has written songs for more than 400 films. Tirumala has contributed more than 5,000 songs to Malayalam cinema. He was born in Cherthala on 13 February 1941 to CJ Bhaskaran Nair and Sasthamangalam Pattanikunnu Veetil Parukuttyamma. After going to Tirumala, Thiruvananthapuram, Bichu became Tirumala.
Singers Sushila Devi, Vijaykumar, Dr. Chandra, Shyama and Darshan Raman are brothers. Bichhu Tirumala’s career began when she wrote poems for her sister to attend an event. In the year 1962, he wrote and acted in the play ‘Balatha Duniyava’ in the Inter-University Radio Drama Competition. In this, he got the first position at the national level. After graduating from Thiruvananthapuram with a degree in economics, he went to Chennai to direct films.
Film career started in 1972
Tirumala started her film career with the 1972 film Bhaja Govindam. Although the film was not released, his song in Brahmamuhurta was highly appreciated. ‘Akkaldama’ was the first film to be released. Shyam, A.T. Omar, Ravindran, G. Along with the composers Devarajan and Ilayaraja, he also gave many hit songs in the seventies and eighties. He also wrote songs for AR Rahman’s only Malayalam film Yoddha.
He has won the State Film Award for Best Lyricist twice. His wife Prasanna Kumari is a retired water authority employee. At the same time, his son Suman Shankar Bichhu is the music director.
